ACTION TIMELINE

October 3, 2007 – The Center and a coalition of allies, represented by Earthjustice, filed a petition with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, asking the agency to set pollution rules for large, oceangoing marine vessels.

July 30, 2008 – A coalition of state attorneys general and conservation groups — including the Center — filed formal letters warning of impending lawsuits over the EPA’s failure to address global warming pollution from oceangoing ships and aircraft. The conservation groups’ notice of intent to sue was filed by Earthjustice.

June 11, 2010 – A coalition of environmental groups, including the Center, filed a lawsuit challenging the EPA’s failure to address greenhouse pollution from oceangoing ships, aircraft and non-road vehicles, as well as engines such as those used in industrial operations.

September 28, 2012 – The Center and a coalition of environmental groups moved to intervene in a court case Thursday to support a low-sulfur fuel requirement for ships in most U.S. waters, including southern Alaska.
